What is Root canal Therapy?
A root canal treatment is a dental procedure to remove inflamed or infected
pulp inside the tooth. Which is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled
and sealed. Root canal treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria from the
infected root canal, prevent reinfection of the tooth and save the natural tooth.
Procedure for Root Canal Treatment :
- A root canal treatment requires one or more appointments (depends on the
condition of tooth & infection, Same can be performed during single sitting
also) and will be performed by a dentist or endodontist.
-
- Local anaesthetic is administered to numb the tooth and increase the comfort
of the patient during the procedure
- A “dental dam” – a small protective sheet
is then put in place over the affected area to isolate the tooth and keep saliva
and other substances away from it while the work is completed
- During preparation of root canal an access opening is made on top of the
tooth and a root canal files are placed into the opening various times to
removing the pulp, nerve tissue, and bacteria
- It helps in cleaning/removing
the infected area. If tooth decay is present, it will also be removed with special
dental instruments.
-
Once the tooth is thoroughly cleaned & verified through X-ray then it will be
sealed with either a permanent filling or temporary filling depends on the
additional appointments for further cleaning of infections.
- At the next appointment, the roots and the inside cavity of the tooth will be
filled and sealed with permanent filling. A filling will be placed to cover the
opening on top of the tooth
- n addition, all teeth that have root canal
treatment should have a crown (cap) placed. This will protect the tooth and
prevent it from breaking, and restore it to its full function.
- Different type of crowns (cap) are present with their own advantages &
disadvantages.
- Same will be discussed by our dentist.
- After treatment, some patient may experience sensitivity, but this will subside
as the inflammation diminishes and the tooth has healed.
- Patient will be given proper instruction after each appointment. Good oral
hygiene practices and regular dental visits will increase the life of the RCT
treated teeth.
Reasons for root canal therapy::
- Decay has reached the tooth pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth)(
Same can be prevented through regular dental check-up & timely
restoration).
- nfection or abscess have developed inside the tooth or at the root tip.
- Injury or trauma to the tooth
